Rudolf Zechner is Professor of Biochemistry at the Institute of Molecular Biosciences at the University of Graz, Austria. Following his Ph.D. thesis in chemistry in 1980 at the University of Graz he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Medical School of this university. From 1985 to 1987 he worked as a Research Associate at the Laboratory of Biochemical Genetics and Metabolism at Rockefeller University, New York, USA. Since 1998 he is a full professor of Biochemistry at the Institute of Molecular Biosciences, University of Graz, Austria. Rudolf Zechner is an acknowledged expert in the field of metabolic lipases and their functional role in lipid metabolism. His most important scientific contributions include studies in mutant mouse models on the tissue-specific, physiological role of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and the function of hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) during fat cell lipolysis. These studies led to the recent discovery of adipose-triglyceride lipase (ATGL) and its coactivator protein CGI-58. ATGL/CGI-58-mediated triglyceride hydrolysis represents the rate-limiting step in fat catabolism in adipose and non-adipose tissues.
